Zvezda has released models from the movie Cars. There are eight kits available. Lightning McQueen, Sally, Mater, Doc Hudson, Luigi, King, Francesco and Finn McMissile. |
They are snap kits in multi coloured plastic. No painting necessary. I am very impressed with the kits but not with the decals. They are not ordinary water slides. Instead they are self-adhesive paper decals. I became curious of how they would look finished, so I decided to build the one with the most complicated livery, Francesco.

I was not impressed with the paper stickers. I wish Zvezda had supplied ordinary decals as well. The kits are so nice that they deserve it. I will build all models as ordinary kits, gluing and painting them. Sally was first out. I have looked at the film again and noticed that I made a mistake with the paint. It should have been a metallic blue colour instead. I just have to live with that. I had to spend several hours making new decals for the kits as I didn't want to use the ones in the kits.

I was going to mix some orange to the red paint for McQueen but when I brought out the red Gunze paint jar it wasn't a pure red I had. Instead it was a shade of red that I wanted from the start. Homemade decals here to.
|
Here is another paint goof. I should have painted Luigi in a very light yellow but that is something I realized after seeing the film again. The chrome paint from Alclad was another mistake from me. I laid it on a Tamiya black acrylic but that was wrong. The chrome reacted with the black and became a nice steel colour instead. Guido is a little kit that came in a Kinder egg some years ago.

On Mater I enhanced the edges around the air filter as it was a bit unsharp toward the firewall. One other thing I did was to remove the cable drum as I didn't like the look of it. It remains to replace. I don't really like to paint but I felt like experimenting a bit now. I painted the whole truck in a rust red paint letting the light brown plastic shine through little. Then I added orange and a dark brown on this. That was done with enamels. For the worn blue and light green, I decided to test AK interactives Worn Effects. I think that it is the hair spray method without the horrible smell of hair spray. On that I used Tamiya acrylic blue and light green as I thought that it would be easier to scratch and if I should mess it up I could easily remove the acrylic leaving the enamel unharmed.

I just want to show the sprues from Doc Hudson. An unusual layout of parts for a car model but they fit very well. |
Doc Hudson. I used Alclad paint for the chrome parts, but I still need to add some Bare Metal Foil to the chrome that is missing.
|
King with my homemade decals.
|
The secret agent Finn McMissile. He is very tiny compared to the others.
