SAAB 32 Lansen Test planes"

The three Lansen test planes used for the Viggen project.
(Models finished 2017)

SAAB A 32A Lansen "Alfa"

This was a quick build. Eight days from start to finish is not bad for me. As this was my fifth Lansen in a short time parts seemed to fall together automatically. Beginning to know this kit and keeping it simple avoiding etch and such helps.

This is "Lansen Alfa" it was used in testing of the Viggen electronics. Earlier it had been a test bed for Draken rocket seats. The white stripes were from those tests, but I built it in a later part of its life.

This build runs with my Viggen prototype theme. I used a vac formed fuel tank from Broplan that I converted with camera openings and also scratch built an electronic pod under the left wing. A resin bomb used as a counter weight came from Maestro models.

SAAB J 32B Lansen 32502

Another Lansen used as a test platform for the Viggen project.

This would be a fighter, so it needed to be converted. The tail has been modified to take the engine exhaust from Maestro model.

Etched set for the cockpit was used for in build.

Resin fighter nose of the J 32B. The large pitot tube used on the one that I'm building is also glued in place.
Lansen A, B, C
Perhaps is should mention the different versions of the Lansen. It was built in three versions:
The A 32A an attack version and S 32C a photo recce version, both can be built from the Heller kit.
The J 32B was a fighter version. It got 30 mm guns (instead of the 20 mm guns in the 32A) so it got bulges on the nose to accommodate them. It also got a more powerful engine than the other two, so the exhaust tail pipe is larger.
To build the fighter there are two options: Converting the Heller kit with parts from Maestro models or the new J 32B kit from Tarangus.
I had some conversion sets lying around and decided to use them before buying a Tarangus kit so what I am building right now is this J 32B that will be the fighter prototype.

I also needed a new canopy. First some plastic to give the basic shape.

Then Milliput was added. That gave me a master for vac forming a new canopy.

The result was a canopy that is higher than the original.

Then the area behind the cockpit needed to be rebuilt.

I started to paint the gloss black stripes when I realized that I had forgot to build camera pods on the wing tips.

A rather dull scheme. Black and silver, but there is some blue on the wing tips to brighten things up.

I'm not very comfortable with painting but I like the "flower" around the base of the pitot tube I managed to make. I wasn't sure it would work.

Moose Republic had decals for the J 32B prototype that I used for this and I also added some of my own.

It is the SAAB J 32B Lansen prototype used as a test bed for the Viggen ejection seats. The etched air brakes tested my patience but in the end I'm rather happy with the model. I can't recall ever seen this plane modelled.

SAAB A 32A Lansen "Gamma"

This is the third Lansen used in the development of the Viggen.

I started on a fighter conversion of the Lansen many years ago which stalled. But now I found two of my scratch-built airbrakes in a box, so they will be used on this kit. I also had one of the inserts left that I will use to build new ones. I also found a very old etch frame that has the ladder and simplified airbrakes. I will probably use the ones in the bottom of the fuselage from this set.

I did immediately run in to trouble with this build. The resin nose has a larger diameter than the kit.

I can't find any builds on the net of this plane, so I had to figure out a solution by my own.

Lots of sanding has been done. The resin nose fits better now.

Not your ordinary looking Lansen.

Getting ready for paint. Not the best looking Lansen, but at least it's different.

I started with the white paint.

Followed by the black. This aircraft was used for tests of the Viggen radar. I thought it would fit in with my collection of Viggen prototypes.

I finally found the second pair of air brakes that I built about 25-30 years ago.

Decals came from Moose Republic.

The resin parts needed to build this one comes from Maestro Models.

"Lansen Alfa" used for testing the electronics, 32502 the Lansen interceptor prototype used for rocket seat tests and "Lansen Gamma" used in the radar tests.
