Early Supermarine Spitfire's

Spitfire Mk.Ia

When I started on my ASR Spitfire I found a second kit. This one in a box. I have no idea why I had two of these. Probably I forgot that I had one and the bagged one was cheap at a hobby show.
(Model finished 2020)

A Group Build on a forum helped me to start on both. This one will be a Mk.Ia.

Black and white has been painted on the bottom but then I nearly mad a big mistake. I brought this to the paintbox thinking it was my ASR plane.
Luckily I noticed it before it became grey. Now it is brown like it should.

Brown and green. Now I must search for some decals.

Time for decals. I had painted it preparing for WZ-H but when it was time for the letters I realised that my decals were to wide.
Well this is a "bonus build" not planned to happen but since I managed to buy two kits I decided to build it simultaneous with the ASR-spitfire.
I decided to use the letters from the kit instead even that they would be wrong with the paint scheme.
Later I had second thoughts. I could just as well use the too wide letters and have the right code instead of the wrong code on the plane.
Neither would be 100% correct so I managed to remove the decals with masking tape and add new decals.
Why plan in advance when one can do the work twice?

Mk.Ia finished. The kit I didn't plan to build.

I used a propeller from the Hasegawa kit and wanted an early straight canopy but the Hasgawa part didn't fit on the Airfix kit.

But I found a picture of a plane with two blade propeller and the new canopy.

ASR Spitfire MK.IIc

I bought this kit many years ago planning of doing an ASR Spitfire.
I was looking at a piece I wrote in 2008 for the IPMS Stockholm home page about my P-47 ESR plane.
I wrote: "It all started with an article of an aircraft wreck found in a lake in Great Britain. It was an aircraft from the 5th ERS (Emergency Rescue Squadron) that had been used to save pilots that landed in the water. Since I already was planning for a Spitfire ASR II that was used for the same purpose I was naturally interested."
So I have wanted to build an ASR Spitfire for more than 12 years. I had a Spitfire period before I bought my first digital camera back in 2004 so it was before that. This means it could have been 20 years ago that I decided that I would build one.
But now the time has come.

The big problem has been the chutes. I couldn't find any clear photos or drawings before but now I have finally found a picture that clearly show the positions of the flare chute/flare tubes.
The lack of yellow code letters will not stop me even if it means hand painting them.
I decided to build the flare chutes as I wasn't sure that they were hidden.

They were visible as I suspected but I doubt that much will be seen when I get the canopy in place.
For the hatches I am using very thin plastic card. They should be flat with the fuselage but I don't think I'll manage to scribe two hatches that small.

I will use the propeller and the starter bulge from the KP Spitfire Mk.IIb kit. As it has parts for the Mk.I, II and V I can still use that kit.

Flare tube hatches in place.

I started to paint. I cut masks for the yellow letters hoping the final result will be acceptable.
If it doesn't work I'll put it away. If I waited 20 years to start it there is no hurry to finish it. One day I might find some decals, but time will tell. Paint and removal of the masks first.

The bottom has been painted and the first coat on the top.

The second coat. Now it is time for the scary part. To remove the masks.

Not perfect but it wasn't a complete disaster so I think that I should be pleased.

Even the 20+ year old decals from Model Decal seems to work. But I forgot to paint the sky fuselage band

I managed to paint the band. I searched my decals but the bands that I found were to green.
Working on the decals. I am really getting fond of this "darkish" colour scheme.

Another one for the boxes in the basement.

It feels a bit odd to see a Spitfire in this colour though.

I used some bombs from the Bristol Bulldog to pose for smoke bombs. I just shortened them a little.
