A Soviet ambulance built on a wartime ZIS-5 chassis. It has simplified front fenders and a wooden
cab.
|
I scratch built the abulance box using a 1/35 scale kit as a pattern. |
This is the old Esci kit.
|
The Opel is quite much out of the box, with a blanket shadowing the driver cabin made of cigarette paper. |
The kit had no glass windows and I was to lazy to some. |
We had an Airfix Airfield SIG at the 08-Open show 2012. For this I stripped an old Airfix Austin Ambulance from a thick coat of brush-paint and repainted it.
|
I do have a couple unbuilt in the stash, but I didn't have the time enough to build one. |
In November 2004 I made a quick build of a 1/72 RPM ambulance (well it started as one at least). A 1/24 scale Ambulance service/maintenance vehicle of this type was a feature in a hobby magazine and that inspired me to build one. I must have been very inspired because I started to build it on a Thursday evening, and it was finished in Wednesday morning.
|
I started with the chassis and cut off the front fenders. |
Plastic card was used to build the new body. |
The canvas roof was made of cigarette paper. |
These cars carried lot of spare parts for the ambulances but could also carry seated causalities. |
The service car needs something to service. Here is the 1917 Model T Ambulance from RPM
|
It is built mostly out of the box. I glued cigarette paper on the roof to get a texture to it and mounted the car on a muddy base. The mud is a mixture of ceramic stucco texture gel, Mig pigments and Mig Acrylic resin. |
I tried some different green colours before settling for a Gunze H78 Olive Drab 2. Perhaps not a correct colour but with all that dirt.... I have later discovered some faults with the kit. Perhaps I'll go back and fix them someday. |
Got myself a small ambulance in a large box.
|
I have mixed feeling for this kit. It got fine details and the parts are moulded well unlike some of their buses. The parts fit OK if one can find out the location for them as there are nothing to help there. |
I will give a little tip for anyone that is going to build it. Don't start with the chassis. Start with the body and build the chassis on it. It is easy to get the chassis some what wrong. My looked good but it turned out to be little warped and the body would't fit. The radiator didn't fit either so I had to cut little in the chassis. |
There are four stretcher included but the kit is made with a closed rear so they wouldn't be visible. I skipped the rear wall and added some plastic strips inside the side walls and roof instead. |
Decals in place. They were nice to work with but the print wasn't too impressive, much to fuzzy. |
Still much to clean but that will change when I put it on a base. I found some WW1 medical personnel from Bachman that I will order. |
I drilled out the lights and added some detail to the roof above the driver. This was a quick build. I got it last Friday and now it is Wednesday. |
Started on a base. Nothing has been done to dirty it up yet but while waiting for some figures to be delivered I have started on a small base for it. |
Ready painted figures for model railroads. There are six figures in the set from Bachman. |
I could/should remove the mould seams and repaint the figures but I call this car finished. There are other models to build. |
